BEDROOM DESIGN

Why Design my bedroom?

Redesigning your bedroom not only adds value to your home but it helps to bring comfort, style and functionality whilst creating a space for you to retreat to.

Creating the right Design for your bedroom can depend on the space you have to work with, your budget and the style and feel you are trying to achieve.

As an interior designer I am frequently asked how to create the right bedroom for you. This isn’t only about making the room look nice, but working out how this affects your every day functions, how you sleep and how it feels when you want to relax.

I can provide you with a custom layout to include furniture arrangements, potential dressing areas, ensuite spaces and explore how to make this all work for you. I can work from floor plans or an existing space and produce a beautiful retreat that you feel comfortable in.

Styles of Bedroom Design

Minimalist: This style works if you want a peaceful, calm feel and like the minimal, clutter free look. Use soft neutral colours, white, beiges or light greys work well. Keep furniture pale, simple, with clean lines.

Modern luxury: This style uses rich materials like leather, velvet and polished wood. Add metallic gold or brass accents. Use darker colours like navy, emerald green or charcoal and add mood, layered lighting to create a sophisticated feel.

Cozy, layered: This style works with a boho feel, adding different textures, throws, cushions and warm lighting. Earthy tones and plants create a natural feel.

Tips for Bedroom Design

Budget: Start by thinking about your budget. This may determine the types of furniture and style you can achieve.

Bed placement: This is really important not only from an aesthetics point but for practicality too. The bed should be easily accessible and opposite the door opening wall if possible.

Storage: Try to incorporate as much storage as possible, you can never have too much! Make the use of awkward spaces. Built in wardrobes are preferable as they allow maximum storage. Buy beds with under storage and use shelving for displaying items.

Lighting: Combine overhead, bedside and task lighting to provide different moods.

Colour: Choose colours to reflect the feel you are hoping to achieve. Blues, greens and beiges provide a calming effect. Add deeper colours where light isn’t an issue to add some drama. Add some artwork, photos or wall coverings to personalise the space.

Why Redesign my Bedroom?

The decoration might feel dated or the room feels uninviting. Changing this can have a positive effect on your mental well being. Your bedroom is probably the most personal space you have so you want the room to feel as stress free as possible, creating a sense of calm.

Does my Bedroom decor affect my sleep?

Yes. Your bedroom environment affects how well you sleep. The layout, colour and setup can all have an impact. Think about de cluttering your bedroom to make the room feel more comfortable. A good quality mattress can help and consider blackout blinds/curtains if you have trouble sleeping with light filtering.

How do I organise my Bedroom?

Good Bedroom Design makes the space work better for you. Try to incorporate clear zones, sleeping, dressing and potentially working. Keep things organised with clever storage saving you time in your daily life. Make the use of awkward spaces by incorporating extra hanging, shelving and dressing areas.

What size furniture should I have?

Consider the size of bed first, fit a Kingsize in if it doesn’t take over the space. Use the spaces beside your bed to have larger bedside cabinets. This gives extra storage and alleviates the ‘dead’ space that may get cluttered. Build in furniture where possible to allow maximum storage.

How do I Design a smaller bedroom?

Be intentional with everything you place in a smaller bedroom. Try and make the space feel as open as possible with good lighting and storage. Use multi purpose furniture like storage beds, dressing tables to double as a desk, ottomans and benches with storage. Use a cohesive colour scheme of paler shades to make the space feel light and airy. Add well placed mirrors to visually double the space and bounce light. Don’t forget to use the upper space is floor space is limited. Wall shelves, tall wardrobes, hooks and mezzanine areas all help to increase space on the floor area. Good mood lighting can help the room feel more spacious.

Do children’s bedrooms need to follow the same Design style as the house?

No. Children’s bedroom’s are an exception to the rule. As an Interior Designer I like to keep homes feeling cohesive in terms of colour and feel. However children’s bedrooms need to feel personal to them. They should be expressive and fun and unique to each child. Keeping a loose theme to match the rest of the home can be achieved by potentially having similar base palettes i.e keeping flooring the same, matching materials like woods, following the style of the home with a more modern or classic feel. Try to avoid themed rooms where possible as children will outgrow these quickly. Instead incorporate these ideas in bedding, artwork, accessories which can be changed over time. Basically a children’s bedroom should feel like part of the home but be uniquely theirs.

Where is the best position for the bed?

This will depend on the shape and size of your room, however there are a few useful tips I can give you:

Start with the bed position against the largest wall. Normally this will be on the wall opposite the door and makes the room feel more organised and stable. Avoid it placed right opposite the door if possible.

Try not to block windows or doorways. The headboard under a window can feel drafty and too bright. Side placement to the window is better.

Try to keep walking space around the bed. In smaller rooms keep at least one side of the bed clutter free.

Avoid placing the bed too close to wardrobes or drawers where they cannot be opened easily.

Bed positions may vary in children’s bedrooms.
